The Women’s School of Business and Leadership (WSBL) has named Dr. Mrs. Victoria Samson, fondly called “Mama Bovas,” as its 2026 Pan African Woman of the Year. The award, announced on July 31st,2026, commemorates the African Union’s Pan African Women’s Day themed “Accelerating Gender Equality Through Women’s Leadership and Enterprise.”
Dr. Samson’s remarkable journey from house help at age six to founder and Group Managing Director of BOVAS Group stands as a powerful embodiment of resilience, integrity, and human-centered entrepreneurship. Her story, now a classical academic case study at WSBL, illustrates how background need not determine destiny in African enterprise.
Born into humble circumstances, young Victoria sponsored herself through school while working menial jobs. She entered the petroleum sector in 1980 as a dealer for Texaco alongside her husband, Architect Samson. By 1990, she had become the first Nigerian to win the prestigious Texaco Latin America and West Africa (LAWA) Best Dealer Award, recording the highest sales performance across West Africa and Latin America.
From that foundation of trust, she built BOVAS Group into one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous downstream oil and gas companies. What started as a single filling station has expanded to over 200 modern petroleum service stations nationwide, employing more than 2,000 people directly as of December 2025 and serving millions more.
The market trusts BOVAS for three core reasons that reflect Mama Bovas’ personal philosophy. First, uncompromising product integrity captured in the mantra “One Liter is One Liter.” In an industry often plagued by trust deficits, Dr. Samson personally deploys mystery shopper strategies to verify pump accuracy, making BOVAS stations the preferred choice for quality fuel. Second, excellence in customer experience, with outlets renowned for cleanliness, safety, and exceptional service—including industry-leading public toilets. Third, a people-before-profit approach that prioritizes staff welfare, customer respect, and community impact.
Her leadership rests on three unwavering values: integrity, excellence, and service. These principles have earned BOVAS nationwide respect for accurate measurement, efficient logistics, diversification into gas and lubricants, and deliberate inclusion of women and youth in job creation.
Beyond business, Dr. Samson’s influence spans academia and public service. In May 2026, she was appointed Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) for a five-year term. She serves as Matron of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) at key depots and holds positions on several boards, including the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketing Association (DAPPMA) and Women in Energy, Oil and Gas (WEOG) Nigeria.
Her philanthropy through the BOVAS Charitable Foundation includes over ₦400 million in donations for COVID-19 relief, breast cancer awareness, university projects, and support for institutions like University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan. During national fuel crises, BOVAS notably sold petrol at official prices, easing scarcity in the Southwest.
Dr. Samson’s academic credentials include programs at Harvard Business School and IESE Business School, Barcelona, alongside multiple honorary doctorates. Her numerous awards include the Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award and various NNPC/PPMC excellence recognitions.
WSBL faculty voted overwhelmingly (95%) to adopt her story as a strategic leadership and entrepreneurship case study. “Dr. Mrs. Victoria Samson is a living case study,” WSBL leadership stated. “She proves that with faith, people, and purpose, African women can build institutions that advance the continent’s Agenda 2063.”
As Africa marks Pan African Women’s Day on 31st July, Mama Bovas exemplifies the leadership and enterprise the AU seeks to accelerate. Her success continues to inspire the next generation of female entrepreneurs across the continent.
